Why we started Dasera?

There was an insider breach today. And yesterday. And the day before, and the day before that. In fact, there’s been an insider data breach every day for the last 10 years.

The business world has become data-driven. Consequently, businesses collect exponential amounts of consumer data and millions of engineers, analysts and data scientists sift through that data every day as a part of their jobs to generate insights and improve results.

But we’re all human.

We make mistakes. We’re careless. Sometimes, we let curiosity get the better of us. In our worst moments, we can also be petty, greedy and even vindictive. When insiders handle data, insider breaches happen. Since insiders are human and insiders are everywhere, insider breaches are everywhere as well.

That’s the human faultline we’ve built our connected world on.

In order to deal with insider breaches, companies have adopted different data governance models -- some are more conscientious and conservative, while many others play it fast and loose to sustain growth.

As a result, billions of records have been stolen due to 'insider breaches'.

Take a pause and think about the number - 6,000,000,000.

(Interesting story: One of those 6 billion records was my own data. And most probably yours too. But we’ll exchange those notes another day.)

What’s the end result?

Now everyone’s losing patience with how consumer data is handled -- consumers, regulators, even governments. Fines, penalties and public shaming around data breaches and privacy violations are now a mainstream sport. Most importantly, breaches have led to a near-complete erosion of trust between consumers and companies

Rebuilding that lost trust is going to be a long and arduous journey.

At Dasera, this is the challenge that excites us.

So far, data security has been built around keeping outsiders out. In the new paradigm, companies must layer their trust and training with technology that protects consumer data not only from outsiders but also from insiders with access to sensitive data -- without disempowering employees or hindering execution.

Our mission

Dasera helps build trust between consumers and companies by enabling safe internal use of sensitive data. We do that by automatically finding, flagging and rewriting unsafe queries on data warehouses.

We wake up every morning, happy to have an opportunity to do the right thing for businesses and consumers. To balance progress with privacy. To combine empowerment with custodianship. To rebuild trust between consumers and companies.

If this mission resonates with you, please be part of the journey. Please come talk to us.
